All people in health care settings must wear a mask (covering mouth and nose) at all times when in the physical presence of other people on the premises. A person will be considered to be in the physical presence of another person if they are in the same room as that other person.
Reusable cloth masks can now be accepted in some health care settings. Single-use surgical masks should be worn in some clinical environments.
There are exceptions for mandatory mask use in health care settings. This includes situations where a mask will hinder the provision of care or communication, there is a relevant medical condition or the person is under 12. A live in staff member or a resident of a residential care facility are not required to wear a mask. Hospital inpatients are generally not expected to wear masks except when being transported through public spaces.
The Direction has now been changed to allow cloth masks to be worn in health care settings. All people (care providers, patients, clients etc.) entering health care facilities are still required to wear masks, but it is no longer specified to be single-use surgical masks. Masks are only required when in the presence of other people. For example, care providers running telehealth appointments alone in office, or hospital patients alone in single rooms, are not required to wear a mask.
There are exceptions to mask wearing in health care settings that do not require a formal exemption. This includes situations where the mask will hinder the care which is being provided, there is a medical condition, communication with a person who is deaf or hard of hearing is required, the person is under 12 and the person is a live in staff member or a resident of a residential care facility.

In recent weeks, there has been increased interest in antigen testing. COVID-19 antigen tests are immunoassays that detect presence of viral antigen specific to SARS-CoV-2. A positive result implies current infection. This differs from PCR which can detect old virus and has a higher sensitivity. Rapid antigen tests may be easier to perform with quicker turn-around times (15-30 min) and are ‘single patient’ tests. TGA approval is being sought for rapid COVID-19 antigen testing. The Lancet has published an informative article comparing PCR and POC testing- read the article here.
